Does coming up with grammar lessons baffle you sometimes and are you wondering how to teach grammar? I took me a while too, but now I know how to teach grammar and how to make grammar lessons engaging and fun! The grammar of English is not always a topic students want to learn about, but with these four tips your grammar lessons will be better than ever. Check them out below!
Step 1: Introduce
How to start teaching grammar is with a fun introductory activity! It shouldn’t ‘teach’ anything yet, just introduce the topic. Pictures (like the ones on the right), videos or games are awesome for this purpose.
Step 2: Teach
First, give students examples from your or their personal life that fit what grammar you want to teach. For example, ask “What are you doing right now?” (Present Continuous) Next, teach the actual grammar point. Explain the rule, go over spelling, etcetera. Make sure students understand so ask them to explain the topic back to you. Then get students to do a few quick examples of an exercise in which they use the grammar point.
Step 3: Practice
Make sure students have a few different ways in which they can practice the grammar point
in action. Give them a couple of exercises.
Step 4: Produce
Get students to produce either a piece of written or spoken text to show that they have understood the grammar point. It must be something original and authentic, like a letter or a newspaper article (left), so not something like the practice exercises. This exercise will really show that they can use the grammar in real life.
